Sunderland are confident of completing the permanent signing of Tottenham defender Dennis Cirkin in the coming days, Football Insider has learned.

A Sunderland source has told Football Insider that negotiations are progressing well and all parties expect an agreement to soon be reached.

The Black Cats are expected to pay a six-figure fee for the youngster after tabling a bid.

News of Cirkin's likely departure prompted an outpouring of anger and disappointment from Spurs fans last night.

Many would have expected him to leave on loan to gain regular match experience at senior level, but a permanent move counts as a major surprise to observers of the club who have been impressed by his progress.

The left-footed teenager was hailed as a rising star by Jose Mourinho when he took over as manager in November 2019.

The Portugese described the youngster in November 2019, via a media conference, as a player with "a lot of quality".

Cirkin first made the bench for the senior team as a 17-year-old shortly after signing his first professional contract.

Sunderland are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements, especially on the left side of their defence.

Academy graduate Denver Hume is Lee Johnson's only option at left-back ahead of the new campaign.

Callum McFadzean left the club at the end of last season and has joined League One rivals Crewe Alexandra.
