'This is Great for West Ham' - Exclusive: McAvennie reacts to big 28-yr-old update

Frank McAvennie claimed that Jack Wilshere has "four years left at the top" but it is "great" for West Ham to get him off their wage bill.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the Irons legend said that it is likely the 28-year-old will have to settle for a pay-as-you-play type deal at his next club.

The Hammers confirmed the departure of the former Arsenal playmaker on Monday after the club mutually agreed to terminate his contract, which was due to expire next summer.

Wilshere made just 19 appearances for the London club, of which only nine were starts, following his arrival on a free transfer in July 2018.

McAvennie fears that while the centre-midfielder had undoubted talent his injury record may be a red flag for clubs.

"It is great for the club to terminate his contract because he was on top wages," he told Football Insider.

"I think he will only be offered a pay-as-you-play type of deal now. There is no doubting his talent but it will be a pay-as-you-play agreement.

"He is still young though and he has still got four years at the top I think.

"I do not think he would be able to handle the Championship because it is very hustle and bustle down there."

Football Insider revealed today that Glasgow giants Rangers have made an approach to sign the 34-time England international on a free transfer.
