West Ham are in talks to sign defender Craig Dawson from Watford, Football Insider understands.

The Hammers have been in the market for a new centre-back all through the transfer window but have struggled to strike a deal for any of their targets.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the Irons have made progress today (Monday, 5 October) over a move for the 30-year-old but that a deal could be finalised after the 11pm international transfer deadline.

West Ham making progress today on signing Craig Dawson from Watford. The deal may go through in the domestic EFL-Premier League window running until 16th October.

With Watford now in the Championship, West Ham have until the domestic window deadlin on 16 October to complete a move for the former West Brom star.

The Irons have explored a number of options to bolster the heart of their defence but David Moyes is yet to add a new centre-back recruit to his ranks.

As revealed by Football Insider, they had tabled bids for the likes of Napoli ace Nikola Maksimovic and Swansea City prospect Joe Rodon, while they saw Bayer Leverkusen pull the plug on a deadline-day move for Jonathan Tah.

They have now turned their attentions to Dawson and know they have over a week to thrash out a deal with the Hornets before the domestic window closes.

The Rochdale-born defender, who has 182 games of Premier League experience under his belt, has not played in any of Watford's opening four Championship games this season.
