Matheus Cunha bids farewell in new message after confirmed Wolves news

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha has taken to social media to thank Gary O’Neil after his dismissal on Sunday (December 16).

O’Neil, 41, was sacked after Wolves’ 2-1 Premier League defeat to fellow strugglers Ipswich on Saturday (December 14) leaving the club in 19th, five points from safety.

Wolves have endured a torrid season, managing only two wins, three draws, and 11 losses. They also hold the worst defensive record in the Premier League, having conceded a staggering 40 goals.

Chairman Jeff Shi said in a statement: “We’re very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team the best of luck for the future.”

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the club are working on a deal to bring current Al-Shabab manager Vitor Periera to replace O’Neil.

Cunha, 25, has been a standout in Wolves’ dismal start to the season, starting 15 of his 17 games across all competitions, scoring eight goals, and providing three assists in 1357 minutes of action.

The Brazilian took to Instagram to thank O’Neil after his dismissal, saying: “I will always be grateful for our time together. Thank you gaffa.”

Wolves have suffered four consecutive Premier League defeats, including crucial losses to fellow strugglers Everton and West Ham, followed by the disappointing result against Ipswich that ultimately got O’Neil the sack.

The West Midlands club face Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester on Sunday (December 22) in yet another potential ‘six-pointer.’
