Matheus Cunha opens door to joining new club after Wolves ‘agreement’

Matheus Cunha is keen to play for a bigger club despite signing a new Wolves contract, sources have told Football Insider.

He was high on the shortlist for Arsenal, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest – among others – in the January transfer window, but signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at Molineux.

That deal includes a £62.5million release clause which has safeguarded the 25-year-old’s value to Wolves, who have struggled financially in recent seasons.

Sources say there will “no doubt” be renewed interest from top Premier League clubs in the summer window if Cunha can maintain his impressive form in the second half of this season.

It is believed Cunha has demanded the release clause to give him the opportunity to make such a move as he has big ambitions and wants to play Champions League football.

The new deal has opened the door to a move in the off-season but he will play a key role for Wolves in their fight against relegation in the remainder of this season.

Cunha has Wolves release clause as big ambitions revealed

Cunha has hit 11 goals and notched four assists in 24 appearances across all competitions this term.

He has started in 21 of those outings and is the top scorer for Vitor Pereira’s side.

Wolves

The forward joined the Midlands club from Atletico Madrid on an initial loan two years ago before an obligation to buy clause made the move permanent for a reported fee of £44million.

Wolves sit 17th in the Premier League table and are two points above the drop zone with 14 games of this season left to play.
