Tottenham news: Campbell leaps to defence of 24-year-old as Matt Doherty controversy analysed

Kevin Campbell has leapt to the defence of Aston Villa’s Matty Cash after his tackle injured Tottenham defender Matt Doherty.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker insisted Cash, 24, was not “reckless” and was in control of himself.

Cash escaped punishment after a strong tackle on Doherty as Spurs beat Villa 4-0 on Saturday.

The tackle forced the Tottenham wing-back to be replaced by Sergio Reguilon at Villa Park.

As reported by Sky Sports (11 April), the injury sustained by Doherty in the challenge with Cash has ruled him out for the season.

Doherty has ruptured his medial collateral ligament and will be sidelined for 12 weeks with the injury.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Cash should have been punished, Campbell said: “Sometimes it is difficult.

“When a player comes in for the ball there is momentum. You cannot always stop that. That is the problem with all of this.

“Cash was trying to win the ball and I wouldn’t say he was out of control. His momentum was moving that way so he couldn’t stop it.

“It is one of those unfortunate ones. It was sad to see Doherty get injured but that tackles gets made often.

“Doherty was come off with an injury which is far from ideal. But I don’t think Cash was reckless. He went in to win the ball. It is just unfortunate that he didn’t just get the ball.”
