Matt Doherty backed for Tottenham move in January after player’s confession – expert

Alan Hutton has backed Matt Doherty to look for a Tottenham exit in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs right-back has urged Doherty to look at his options in the winter transfer window.

The 30-year-old has made just four appearances for Antonio Conte’s side so far this season after returning from a knee ligament injury suffered in April.

The defender was in the starting lineup for the Lilywhites against Brighton on Saturday (8 October), replacing the suspended Emerson Royal.

As quoted by the Evening Standard (10 October), last week Conte spoke out against the Doherty and said he was “not in the right way” to start games.

Following the 1-0 win over the Seagulls the right-back said he took “no offence” to the Italian’s comments and insisted with a run of games he will be able to “shine again”.

The Ireland international has two years left on his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

But Hutton has insisted if Doherty cannot keep his place in the starting lineup once Emerson returns, he should look for other options.

I think everybody has to look at their options,” he told Football Insider.

They brought in Djed Spence and even though Conte says he is one for the future, he is also nowhere near the first team. It is one of those positions where they are loaded and they have got options.

I think Doherty is at an age now where he wants to play regularly. He doesn’t want to sit on the bench and look in. Two years, he has got a little bit of security there but he wants to play football after a long layoff. So he might have to look at his options moving forward if this continues.
