Matt Doherty could be binned ‘all of a sudden’ as Tottenham verdict issued – pundit

Matt Doherty could find himself on the scrapheap at Tottenham once again after his crushing injury blow, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 30-year-old could be “well back in the pecking order” by the time he is fit again.

According to football.london’s Alasdair Gold (10 April), Doherty will miss the rest of this season with a knee injury after limping off in the first half of Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday (9 April).

The former Wolves man was operating in a left wing-back role during the match but has also earned plaudits for his performances on the right-hand side of Antonio Conte’s five-man system.

Doherty, who was linked with a January return to Molineux, had notched two goals and four assists since New Year’s Day.

Whelan suggested those links could now resurface as the likes of Sergio Reguilon, Ryan Sessegnon, and Emerson Royal stake their claims.

“He’s going to have to sit back and watch everyone else potentially impress in that spot,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“You’ve got Sessegnon, Reguilon, and Royal – those three could put him well back in the pecking order.

“All it takes is for someone to go on a roll and produce the performances Conte wants from his wing-backs, and he’ll be out the side.

“All of a sudden, he could find himself back to square one and ready to be sold. That could be really disheartening for him.”

Tottenham

Tottenham sit fourth in the Premier League – three points ahead of fifth-place rivals Arsenal.

Conte’s side face Brighton this Saturday (16 April).
