Matt O’Riley: Celtic expert suggests offer is imminent

Celtic will offer Matt O’Riley a new contract this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie claimed that O’Riley, 23, is unlikely to attract interest from the Premier League and the club will look to offer him fresh terms in the off-season.

The midfielder has been a standout for Celtic this season and was reportedly the subject of a bid from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window.

He is deemed to be one of the club’s most high-value assets, with Football Insider revealing (22 January) that Celtic will demand at least £20million for the Denmark international this summer.

English sides not interested in Celtic ace Matt O’Riley – McAvennie

O’Riley penned a new deal with the Hoops in September, keeping him under contract until 2027.

McAvennie suggested that O’Riley could seek a move away this summer but was adamant he could not move to a club “better” than Celtic.

“I don’t know where he’d go to that’s better than Celtic,” he told Football Insider.

“I can’t see any Premier League teams coming in for him, so it would have to be an international move.

“Playing in Italy would suit Matt, but nowhere would be better than Celtic.

“I think the club will offer him a new deal this summer and then it’s down to O’Riley.

“You can’t have a go at him if he wanted to go as he’s won the league.

“It’s a funny circumstance because he’s done well.

“When they do well, there’s always a risk they’ll move on.”
