Matt Targett: Aston Villa loanee won’t be at Newcastle next season after what I’ve seen – pundit
Newcastle United will not try to sign Matt Targett permanently after his loan expires.
That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Toon’s new star.
Newcastle confirmed they had signed Targett, 26, from Aston Villa until the end of the season on deadline day (31 January).
He has now made two appearances for the club, playing the full 90 minutes in a win over Everton (8 February) and a draw against West Ham (19 February).
However, McAvennie insists Targett has no long-term prospects at St James’ Park.
“He won’t be there next season,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“You look at Villa and, yes, they have signed Digne and you would think Targett doesn’t have a future at Villa.
“But Newcastle won’t be signing him. A the end of the season he will get a word of thanks and a handshake then he will be on his way.
“Newcastle will be looking for the big boys to come and join them. I mean, you read some of the names they have been linked with, incredible.
“I just don’t see him being there. He is a good player, he’s proved that.
“But I think Newcastle will be looking for far better players to push them up the table.
“I’m sure Targett won’t have any shortage of offers if he has no place at Villa, as I say he is a quality player.”

Newcastle are next in action against Brentford on Saturday (26 February).
As it stands, the Magpies are unbeaten in six league games and are out of the relegation zone.
