Matt Targett: Newcastle tipped to ‘suddenly’ pull off top signing after £15m update – pundit
Signing Matt Targett from Aston Villa for £15million would be a “shrewd” bit of business for Newcastle United, according to Alex McLeish.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa boss heralded the 26-year-old’s impact at St James’ Park since joining temporarily in January.
As reported by the Chronicle on Tuesday (8 March), Newcastle have agreed a deal in principle to turn Targett’s loan move permanent for £15million at the end of the season.
The left-back has been a regular for Eddie Howe since his move to the north east.
McLeish insisted tying him down for £15million would be another smart move from the Magpies.
McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “A very, very consistent player. I watched him at Fulham and he’s been a regular for Villa as well.
“For me, it’s another shrewd signing for a guy who now has got a hell of a lot of experience in the division.
“He is looking like a really good player. You can see Newcastle have got an extremely high confidence level. When you get three points on the board, you can’t wait until the next week.
“All of a sudden that confidence soars. The signings that they’ve made have been shrewd.”
Targett has played four times for Newcastle since his temporary move.
The full-back has a total of 130 Premier League appearances under his belt after spells at Villa and Southampton.

Targett joined the Villans from the Saints for a reported £11million back in 2019.
His contract at Villa Park runs until the summer of 2025.
