Matt Targett: Permanent Newcastle United move ‘written already’ after transfer confession – pundit
Noel Whelan has tipped Newcastle United to strike a deal to sign Matt Targett permanently from Aston Villa before the summer window.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the move is “written already” after the 26-year-old’s impressive performances on loan.
Discussing a potential move, as quoted by the Chronicle (21 April), Targett confessed he “hopes something gets sorted” as he has “really enjoyed” his time on Tyneside.

The Athletic (22 April) claim Eddie Howe has not made a decision on whether to pursue a permanent deal this summer.
However, Whelan suggested a deal is almost inevitable.
Asked if he expects Newcastle to strike a deal before the summer, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Absolutely. I think discussions will have taken place already.
“The fact he’s out there on loan tells the story that Steven Gerrard, very quickly, got him out the door to Newcastle.
“Obviously Digne is a tell-tale story straight away. It’s written out already, the fact he’s available. If you want him, you can have him.
“He’s one of these players that is very consistent. It was a surprise when he left. He’s been fantastic for Newcastle, results and performances are proving that.
“I think that is one that is written already. He has done enough to deserve a contract. It is just about sorting a fee out for the player.”
Targett has played 12 times for Newcastle since joining on loan in January.
He made 17 Premier League appearances for Villa in the first half of the season.
