Matt Targett will not play for Aston Villa again after ‘surprise’ transfer reveal – pundit
Matt Targett has played his last game for Aston Villa, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England and Leeds United full-back praised Targett’s decision to join Newcastle United on loan on deadline day in the January transfer window.
The left-back told talkSPORT on Wednesday (16 February) he made the move to play regular football after the signing of Lucas Digne.
Targett admitted he was “surprised” when the club brought in the France international.
“When a club bring in a player who plays in your position and can only play in that position, let’s be honest,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“It’s not like they brought in a midfielder or a forward player who can play in two or three separate positions.
“You’re a left-back, they brought in a left-back for £25million, the writing is on the wall.
“Clearly they think he’s better than you, so he’s going to get the chance to pay those next six or seven games. If he does OK then he’s going to stay in the team. Digne is a good player so why would he not perform well enough to stay in the team?
“The manager thinks he’s better than him and has paid £25million. Does he hang around and hope he picks up a niggle or does he get away and go and play football.

“I think he’s made the right decision because otherwise he would have just sat there and festered thinking he should have gone.
“Whether it be at Newcastle or somewhere else, I don’t see Targett going back to Aston Villa.”
