Matty Doherty: Tottenham ‘could save millions’ after Conte reveal – pundit

Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Matt Doherty for his “brilliant” form in a Tottenham shirt.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one claimed the 30-year-old “could save the club millions” in the transfer market this summer.

Doherty has established himself in Antonio Conte’s starting XI this calendar year ahead of Emerson Royal.

The right-back has excelled in recent wins over Leeds United and Everton, contributing two goals and two assist in the process.

As quoted by Football.London (10 March), Antonio Conte singled the full-back for praise.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Doherty’s form, Robinson said: “He’s been given his opportunity under Conte and rightly so.

“I thought he was brilliant against Everton. He has played very well since he’s coming into the team.

“He has not played to his full potential since he’s been at Wolves. Now we are starting to see why Spurs paid the money for him. He’s showing his credentials.

“He has between now and the end of the season to continue doing that.

“Doherty has grasped his opportunity and if he can keep playing like that until the end of the season, he could save the club millions. They may not need to go into the transfer market again for a right wing-back.

“It will come down to what Conte wants at the end of the day.”

Doherty struggled for game time under previous manager Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo.

He played just seven minutes of Premier League football under the latter.
