Mauricio Pochettino: Chelsea have made ‘very dangerous’ mistake – Ex-PL CEO

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Chelsea parting with manager Mauricio Pochettino is a “very dangerous” move.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed no one would have expected the Blues to finish sixth, even “five or six weeks” ago.

Chelsea confirmed on Tuesday (21 May) that Pochettino has left the club by mutual consent – just days after the conclusion of the 2023-24 campaign.

Reports have claimed the Argentine disagreed with the club over strategy and was rebuffed in his attempts to become more involved in key decision-making.

The London club finished sixth this term and will play Europa League football next term after an impressive fightback in the second half of the season.

Chelsea ‘should’ve supported Pochettino’, says ex-Everton CEO Wyness

Chelsea had initially struggled for form under Pochettino but only Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City have picked up more points in 2024.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s been very interesting.

“I personally think Pochettino finished strong, and it showed what a bit of stability could do.

“I think he needed more experience in his squad.

“To finish where they did, no one would have expected that – even five or six weeks ago.

“Stability is the key, and I thought another season with Pochettino would have reaped rewards for them.

“But they have now changed again and that could be very dangerous.

“They really should’ve supported Pochettino and tried to have a quiet time – and let him get a couple of experienced players through the door.

“They’re now going to have a very serious Thursday-Sunday routine next season, and you need experience in that situation.

“I believe it’s a mistake – but I’m not signing the cheques.”
