Mauricio Pochettino could return to Tottenham after latest twist – pundit

Frank McAvennie can’t understand why former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been out of management for so long.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker urged Pochettino against holding out for the top job at Man City or Liverpool.

According to The Times (22 January), Antonio Conte and Spurs bosses have paused contract talks until the end of the season.

Antonio Conte looks on during his time as Tottenham manager

Conte is said to be focussing on turning around the team’s form instead of discussing his long-term position and wants to see the extent he is backed when it comes to January signings.

The Italian’s deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expires in the summer and the club have the option to extend his contract by one year.

According to Italian journalist Marco Conterio (22 January), the Lilywhites have begun talks with former boss Pochettino in the event Conte does not stay in London.

McAvennie said Pochettino’s return to management is long overdue.

I can’t understand why Pochettino has been out the game for so long, he’s a brilliant manager,” he told Football Insider.

I think he should be back in football. If he is sitting waiting on Liverpool or Man City he can forget it. He will be waiting all day.

[Jurgen] Klopp is not going to get sacked and Pep [Guardiola] is not going to get sacked at Man City that is for sure. It is just not going to happen.

I thought he should have gone to Man United. I do not know whether they would want him back at Tottenham, but you can see it happening.
