Mauricio Pochettino ‘definitely’ on Tottenham shortlist after Thomas Frank sack news

Tottenham are “definitely” considering Mauricio Pochettino among the leading candidates to become their next manager if Thomas Frank is sacked.

Frank‘s position has become untenable after Tottenham lost 2-1 to West Ham last time out, meaning they have now won just three of their last 15 games.

Football Insider revealed on 10 January that Frank could be sacked by Tottenham if his side fail to beat West Ham after losing against Aston Villa.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, a reunion with Pochettino is growing increasingly likely if they decide to pull the trigger.

Tottenham have been keeping tabs on his situation, while the boss has “never hidden” his willingness to return to the club where he remains highly regarded.

Mauricio Pochettino opens door to Tottenham return

Football Insider revealed on 16 January that Pochettino is open to returning to Tottenham and would not rule out taking the job if it was on offer.

Any move for the 53-year-old would have to wait until after the World Cup, where he will lead the U.S.A on home turf and hopes for a successful tournament.

Tottenham, though, remain strong admirers of his while there is also a feeling that the move would get the fans back on side after what has become a toxic season.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Pochettino himself, he’s never hidden his desire to maybe return to Tottenham. He feels he’s got unfinished business there.

“So he would be somebody that I’m sure the club have continued to keep tabs on.

“If something does happen with Thomas Frank, Pochettino would tick a lot of boxes because of his experience and everything else.

“But yeah, nothing’s going to happen until the summer on that one. And let’s see what happens with Thomas Frank between now and then.

“But look, Pochettino, top manager, did a great job in his first spell at Tottenham.

“I’m sure he’s somebody who would definitely be in there thinking if they do need to replace Thomas Frank.”

Thomas Frank sack update emerges at Tottenham

Former Spurs scout Mick Brown warned Football Insider on 12 January that Frank will be sacked by Tottenham if results to not take an immediate turn for the better.

Following defeats to both Aston Villa and West Ham, there is a growing feeling that he will not be able to recover his position amid a toxic atmosphere.

Chants of “sacked in the morning” rang out from the home supporters against West Ham, while there have been suggestions the players are not performing for him.

Football Insider revealed on 13 January that Tottenham could appoint an interim manager until the end of the season if they part ways with Frank.

That would open the door for Pochettino to arrive after the World Cup, although his future will largely depend on whether the U.S.M.N.T enjoy a successful tournament.
