McAvennie ‘amazed’ by Kent potentially quitting Rangers in last-gasp deal after Campbell reveal

Frank McAvennie insists Rangers will hang onto their key men during the final days of the transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Celtic icon revealed he couldn’t believe what he read on social media at the weekend.

Being knocked out of the Champions League has left a financial hole Rangers will struggle to fill.

The most obvious way to fill that hole is with player sales and Ryan Kent could be one of the Gers’ most sellable assets.

However, as reported by the Athletic’s Jordan Campbell (19 August), Steven Gerrard would fight harder to keep Kent over any other player at Ibrox.

As first revealed by Football Insider, Kent has a £20million release clause in his contract.

McAvennie claims it would be a shock if Kent was asking to leave and insisted he will remain at Ibrox.

“There are rumours I’ve seen that Kent’s asking for a move,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I saw that yesterday and I thought wow, I would be amazed if that was true.

“Part and parcel of playing for the Old Firm sides is being linked away.

“Rangers can’t lose Kent this late in the window. I know Gerrard has criticised him but he’s one of their best players.

“He’s not going to ask for a move now, if he was going to ask after going out of the Champions League he would have asked the day after they lost.

“I don’t know if Rangers are going to let anyone go now, it’s very late.”
