McAvennie amazed by what Liam Scales did in Celtic win over Rangers

Celtic central defender Liam Scales was a standout performer in their 3-0 victory over arch-rivals Rangers on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie believes the 26-year-old really ‘stepped up’ as the Scottish champions eased to victory in the first Old Firm derby of the season.

Scales’ place in the Glasgow club’s starting eleven is now uncertain following the signing of Auston Trusty from Sheffield United.

The United States international defender joined as part of the club’s late deadline day splurge, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Liam Scales puts in big performance for Celtic vs Rangers

Scales has started and finished all five of Celtic’s games so far this season with his side yet to concede a single goal in the Scottish Premier League.

The Republic of Ireland international was a wall at the back during the Old Firm, winning 100% of his tackles, making two blocks, and six defensive clearances.

“Scales has stepped up to the mark”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“That’s the best game I’ve seen Scales play. All of a sudden we bring a centre-back in and Scales steps up.

“That’s what competition does for you, and it’s great, we’ve not had that competition for a long time.

“Now he’s got competition, Scales has stepped up to the mark. Greg Taylor didn’t do too badly either.

“Maybe that’s what has been lacking at the back and fair play to the boy.

“I know I’ve been criticising him but he stepped up over the weekend and did well.”
