McAvennie baffled by Jesse Lingard after ‘big’ Nottingham Forest announcement

Frank McAvennie doesn’t understand why Jesse Lingard chose Nottingham Forest over West Ham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hammers and Celtic striker said that his former team are a “bigger club” than Forest.

On Thursday (21 July), Nottingham Forest confirmed the signing of Lingard, 29, from Man United following the expiration of his contract at Old Trafford.

He put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the club after joining on a free transfer.

The England international enjoyed a successful loan spell with West Ham during the second half of the 2020-21 season.

When asked how big a loss it was for David Moyes’ side to miss out on re-signing the midfielder, McAvennie told Football Insider: “It’s his loss it’s not West Ham’s loss.

He loved it at West Ham.

Everyone is saying that Nottingham Forest are signing big players and they’re going to charge up the table. At the moment I would think they’re going to be struggling.

It’s a big ask to come in and do it and they’ll have to spend an awful lot of money to get to the top half of the table.

West Ham

I don’t understand why he’s gone to Nottingham Forest. Only Jesse will know.

West Ham are the bigger club at this moment in time. He could have had 60,000 fans that loved him there. I just don’t get it.”
