McAvennie fears for Jordan Henderson and Liverpool teammate as ‘problem’ spotted

Frank McAvennie fears Liverpool midfielders Jordan Henderson and James Milner no longer have the legs needed to compete at the highest level.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said “great experience” is no longer enough for centre-midfielders.

Jurgen Klopp’s side lost further ground in the title race with a 3-3 draw with Brighton on Saturday (1 October).

Henderson, 31, was one of seven players aged over 30 in the Reds’ starting lineup.

He was partly at fault for Brighton’s opener.

Milner was a second-half substitute in the draw at Anfield.

When asked by Football Insider if Jurgen Klopp is to blame for Liverpool’s struggles this season, McAvennie said: “Look, Klopp has got more than enough credit in the bank.

“It is quite obvious that the problem is the defence. Andy Robertson is still out, they miss him.

“James Milner and Jordan Henderson are playing a lot but it is a young man’s game now. You will get run over even if you have great experience. You have to be able to catch people.

“Going from the best defence in the league to one of the worst is a problem. [Virgil] van Dijk has to sort it out. He is the constant back there.

“Klopp will sort it out. To score three goals at home and not win is not good though. The players are not doing it. Sort it out.”
