McAvennie: Gerrard set for Rangers showdown talks with Morelos amid major update today
Frank McAvennie has tipped Steven Gerrard to hold showdown talks with Alfredo Morelos over his Rangers future.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Celtic and Scotland striker delivered his verdict after FC Porto made an approach over the striker to the Ibrox outfit.
Football Insider learned today (26 June) Rangers have told the Portuegese outfit they value Morelos at £13million and a source has added that his future at Ibrox lies in the balance tonight.
His current Rangers contract expires in the summer of 2023 and talks over an extension have not progressed.
“I would imagine Steven Gerrard has been in talks with the player to see where he is,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“It may be agents trying to get the player a better deal, we know what agents are like.

“I’m not sure if it would be a better deal at Porto. I imagine he’s on decent money and I’m not sure if Porto would be able to better that.
“I keep saying these boys, the agents keep saying ‘So-and-so’s in for you.’ If you play well, clubs will come in for you and you don’t need an agent to sell you to places. It’s about how well you do on the park.
“I don’t mind that because this season he’s done well and Rangers have done well. It was when he wasn’t playing well and didn’t have a smile on his face and clubs were supposedly in for him. I thought ‘Nobody’s going to take him if he’s moping about.’
“But now he’s got a smile on his face and he’s scoring goals. He’s the main guy at Rangers so it would be sad to see him go but I’m not sure I can see it happening in the near future.”
