McAvennie ‘hiding behind the couch’ after what he has seen at Celtic

Frank McAvennie has claimed Celtic missed Callum McGregor in their Champions League games.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said players like Aaron Mooy are not up to the standard of the top European competition.

The Celts ended their hopes of European football in the new year as they drew 1-1 with Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday (25 October).

Ange Postecoglou’s side are bottom of the group on two points with one game left against Real Madrid.

As quoted by Sky Sports (25 October), the Green and Whites boss said his side know the areas that they have “fallen short” in in the competition.

But Postecoglou credited the players for being “bold” on Europe’s top stage.

McAvennie claimed the Australian will be able to fix the problems the squad faced during the competition.

I just think we are missing Callum McGregor,” he told Football Insider.

Mooy was different class at the weekend but that step up to the Champions League is a bit much for him. It is alright for Scotland. Maybe he is just not fit enough.

Celtic

You make a mistake and you get punished. There are too many people beyond the ball and when they lose it there is nobody sitting in midfield. You are hiding behind the couch every time they lose the ball.

But I have no qualms that Ange will sort it out, he is a massive pro.
