McAvennie issues Ange Postecoglou claim after Celtic reveal – ‘what I’ve been told’

Frank McAvennie has insisted it is “crucial” Ange Postecoglou is involved in areas of Celtic outside of the first team.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said Postecoglou is heavily involved in choosing what players to sign.

Speaking to Off the Ball (23 September), Celtic B team boss Darren O’Dea said Postecoglou acts more like a “director of football” at Parkhead, rather than just a manager.

He said that everything at the club goes through Postecoglou but the bosses still retain a lot of autonomy.

O’Dea added that the Aussie boss is “sticking his neck on the line” and “believes in what he does”.

When asked how important it is for a club’s manager to play a wider role, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I think it’s crucial.

He knows who he brings in will determine if he stays or not. Nobody’s infallible. When they’re playing terribly it falls on the manager. It’s only right that he should buy the players and he gets the blame if they don’t perform well, he’ll get the blame even if it’s not him.

Celtic

What I’ve been told is that he speaks to his agent and tells him who he wants and the agent goes and speaks to whoever. It’s great that he can do that. People still fly all over the world to go and watch players, you’ve still got to go and watch them.

He’s bringing in players and they’re fitting into the changing room, they’re all getting on great. There’s nobody in there that’s a bad apple, anybody that’s wanting to leave will be allowed to leave. People that don’t want to be there will be out the door, Ange will let them leave.
