McAvennie issues ‘big’ Ivan Toney claim after source’s Tottenham reveal

Frank McAvennie has suggested Ivan Toney could snub Tottenham in favour of a move to Man United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Toney would not want to be “second fiddle” to Harry Kane.

On Tuesday (11 October), sources told this site that Spurs are keeping tabs on the 26-year-old as they assess potential targets ahead of the January window.

Antonio Conte’s side are regularly watching the striker and sent a scout to Brentford’s 5-1 defeat to Newcastle United last Saturday (8 October).

Toney has three years left on his contract at the Brentford Community Stadium.

But McAvennie claimed Toney was “a big time player” who could handle the pressure of a massive club.

I do not know if Ivan Toney is the right man for Tottenham,” he told Football Insider.

“They have got Son [Heung-min], they have got Kane, he is not going to go anywhere soon. They have got other strikers there.

“I think Toney could get in the squad for the World Cup. I think he is a great player. I do not think Tottenham is the team for him because he will be second fiddle to Kane.

He is the kind of player that Tottenham would like because he works his socks off. But who are they going to drop to put him in?

I think we will see him going to somewhere like Man United. That is the kind of player they need because he works so hard. Somebody like Toney might go there and re-galvanise.

He is a big time player. Tottenham would be a good deal but he would want a guaranteed start.
