McAvennie issues Celtic transfer claim after expert’s Carl Starfelt update

Carl Starfelt’s injury will “focus minds” at Celtic in the club’s hunt for a new centre-back.

That’s according to former Hoops hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the defender’s latest blow.

Starfelt was replaced before half-time during Sweden’s clash with Slovenia last week (2 June) after suffering a suspected hamstring injury.

The Celtic ace confirmed via Instagram (4 June) that the problem will keep him out of this month’s remaining international fixtures.

In a boost to the Hoops, Football Insider pundit and injury expert Ben Dinnery has claimed (8 June) the injury may not be the “worst-case scenario” despite the 27-year-old’s inability to leave the field under his own steam.

McAvennie claims the injury might push a new centre-back higher up Ange POstecgolou’s transfer wishlist.

“I have said before, I don’t think Jullien will stay,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He barely had a look in last season and Ange wants players who he will actually lose.

“It just highlights the place we will be if Starfelt gets injured during the season.

“That leaves us with Carter-Vickers really and he isn’t even our player. He might sign but we don’t know at this point.

“So I think a new centre-back will be on the manager’s wishlist.

“He will want players in for pre-season and this injury might just focus minds.”

Starfelt made 44 appearances during his first season at the club.

He moved to Celtic from Rubin Kazan in the summer of 2021.
