McAvennie issues emphatic Allan McGregor claim after what he’s seen at Rangers

Frank McAvennie has backed Allan McGregor to regain the number one jersey at Rangers this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker said McGregor “hasn’t done anything wrong” and will eventually win his number one spot back.

The 40-year-old has been on the bench for all of the Gers games so far this season, including their Champions League third round qualifiers against Union Saint-Gilloise.

Jon McLaughlin, 34, was first choice again in the game against St Johnstone on Saturday (13 August).

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side won 4-0 at Ibrox.

McGregor has been second choice to McLaughlin so far this season despite starting between the sticks for 48 times last season.

On 20 June, the club confirmed McGregor has signed a one year contract extension.

When asked if the former Scotland international will continue to be second choice this season, McAvennie told Football Insider: “McGregor at the moment, for me, I don’t think he’s done anything wrong.

The manager is playing the younger guy but McGregor for me is number one.

Good keepers are like fine wine you leave them and they get better and better so I would think McGregor will be back to number one.

McGregor made 48 appearances for the Gers across all competitions last season and helped his side reach the Europa League final.

In those outings, the shot-stopper conceded 47 goals and kept 17 clean sheets.
