McAvennie issues emphatic Calvin Ramsay verdict after Liverpool reveal
Frank McAvennie has suggested Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp may turn to Calvin Ramsay in the coming weeks.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker suggested that having someone like Ramsay, 19, to “mentor” could “bring out the best” in Virgil van Dijk.
Ramsay returned to training with the Reds on Thursday (29 September).
As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (30 September), Jurgen Klopp said he is “over the moon” that the right-back is able to train.
However, the Reds boss added that the defender is not ready to play yet.
Ramsay spent the majority of pre-season away from the rest of the squad after a pre-existing back injury was picked up by medical staff.
It meant that the Scot was unable to train with the rest of the first team.
When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Ramsay, McAvennie said: “If he’s ready they’ll put him in.
“Klopp doesn’t mind. If they’re ready they’re old enough as far as he’s concerned. He needs to do something now because they’re letting goals in.

“If Ramsey comes in Van Dijk will be like a father figure to him. I think he’ll be teaching him and it might be just what Van Dijk needs to give him the kick. He’ll be organising and that might be the way round it because you don’t become a bad player over night.
“If they put him in and let Van Dijk nurture him and bring the best out of him, it might bring the best out in Van Dijk because he’s not been playing his best either. You can’t just blame other people, some of the weight has to fall on his shoulders.“
