McAvennie issues ‘ridiculous’ James Sands verdict as Rangers controversy analysed
Frank McAvennie has claimed James Sands should have been sent off for Rangers in the game against Ross County on Saturday (27 August).
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker said Sands’ challenge on Jordy Hiwula was “ridiculous”.
As shown on Sky Sports (29 August), Sands pulled down the Ross country striker who was through on Jon McLaughlin’s goal.
The USA international had already been shown a yellow card by referee Don Robertson.
The Gers, who trail Celtic by two points at the top of the Scottish Premiership, went on to win the game 4-0.
When asked for his assessment of the challenge, McAvennie told Football Insider: “It should have been a red card.
“It was ridiculous and they should’ve had a man sent off. It’s a completely different game if they’re down to ten men. I’m not saying Rangers wouldn’t have won the game but it makes it different.

“Rangers are a strong capable team and they would’ve coped with it but it does make it a different game. I think they might have won anyway but it’s a hell of a change if one of your centre-halves is sent off.
“That shouldn’t have been allowed. I don’t like shouting at referees but they make mistakes. This early on, it’s too blatant. I’ve not heard one person say he shouldn’t be off. Even Kris Boyd has been quiet on this one.”
