McAvennie lambasts ‘hungover’ Josip Juranovic as new Celtic details emerge
Frank McAvennie has slammed Josip Juranovic for looking “hungover” in the derby clash between Celtic and Rangers on Monday (2 January).
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker was left “confused” by Ange Postecoglou’s decision to bring on Juranovic at left-back when Alexandro Bernabei was fit and available on the bench.
Favoured left-back Greg Taylor started the game but was replaced by Juranovic on the 20-minute mark after re-aggravating a hamstring knock, despite Bernabei ready and waiting on the bench.
As shown on Sky Sports (4 January), Juranovic was largely at fault for the Gers’ equaliser when his sloppy defending allowed Fashion Sakala to break with the ball and find Ryan Kent on the edge of the Celtic penalty area.
As quoted by footballscotland (6 January), Postecoglou admitted the Croatian didn’t have his “best game” against the Light Blues but explained that he wasn’t felling “100 per cent” ahead of the clash.
The Aussie boss insisted he has “no issues” with the defender who is still “very important” to Postecoglou’s team.
McAvennie couldn’t understand the manager’s decision.
“I was confused as to why Ange brought Juranovic on at left-back instead of Bernabei,” he told Football Insider.
“The left-back was sitting on the bench. I do not get it. It was as if he was just back from a stag weekend. He was all over the place, it was like he had come back from the weekend hungover.
“Celtic did not deserve the win so we will take the point and move on.”

The Hoops have already bounced back from the draw with a 2-0 victory over Kilmarnock on Saturday (8 January).
They face Killie again next weekend (14 January), in the League Cup semi-final.
