McAvennie ‘laughing’ at Rangers after what he saw against Liverpool

Frank McAvennie “felt sorry” for Rangers after their 7-1 Champions League defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday (12 October).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker said that although he “laughed” at the scoreline, he felt bad for the Light Blues.

Despite going in to half time at 1-1, the Gers went on to concede six goals in the second half of the European clash with the Reds.

As revealed by FootballScotland (13 October), the Bears have never before conceded seven goals in a European competition.

As quoted by the Daily Mail (13 October), Giovanni van Bronckhorst said his side have “no excuses” for the performance.

The Gers boss added his players need to “accept the criticism”.

But McAvennie said it is not surprising that Rangers are suffering in Europe this season.

You have got to remember who they are playing against,” he told Football Insider.

Ajax, Napoli and Liverpool, they are massive teams. McGregor, the form he is on, could not get anywhere near Salah.

I have got nothing but praise for Rangers because they got there, they got to the Champions League. They have got one hell of a group. What chance do you have with them?

I did not think they would get many wins anyway. It was a hard one. Did I laugh? Yeah but I felt sorry for them.

The manager told them to go and applaud the fans after the game, there was nobody there.

That was Liverpool hitting their form and it was a joy to watch.
