McAvennie names the Celtic stars who are really letting the team down – it’s not Kyogo

Celtic midfielders must improve their distribution into the box to get the ball to Kyogo Furuhashi more often.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie savaged midfielders for the “big problem” they have caused for the frontline.

Celtic have struggled to find the back of the net in recent fixtures having scored just seven goals in their last five games in all competitions, including in two league draws which could allow Rangers to move to the summit of the table.

Furuhashi’s goalscoring form has dipped amid their goalscoring issues, with the 29-year-old bagging just three league goals in his last 10 appearances.

Kyogo Furuhashi off the pace but four Celtic stars have been worse

McAvennie was adamant that Kyogo was not to blame for his struggles in front of goal and blasted Celtic’s midfielders for not giving him the ball in good areas and for arriving into the box too late.

“Kyogo touched the ball twice in the box last week [against St Mirren],” he told Football Insider.

“That’s ridiculous, that’s criminal for a player of his standard.

“It’s not his fault, but I’m not going to blame him by any stretch of the imagination.

“The boys have got to find him.

“I can see it and everyone can see it.

“It’s down to the midfield players to make sure they can get the ball to him.

“The midfield players are coming into the box too late, it’s a big problem.

“They need to mix it up and I think they’d get a lot of benefit from this.”
