McAvennie shares ‘£25m’ Celtic signing claim after top 50 reveal
Celtic are never going to spend huge sums on a single player despite “£25million” new signing claim.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie said players nowadays want to go where the money is and the Scottish league is a stepping stone for that.
According to STV (31 July), the Celts are the only Scottish club to be included in the top 50 most valuable brands in world football.
The Hoops were placed 42nd in Brand Finance’s top 50 list, valuing the Scottish champions at almost £91million.
The Parkhead club are one of only five teams from outside of the top five leagues to be featured on the list.
But despite Celtic’s lofty valuation, fans shouldn’t expect to see big transfer spending as a result.
Speaking to Sky Sports (5 August), Brendan Rodgers insisted there will be no £15-£20m signing for the club this summer.
When asked if he is surprised the Hoops aren’t willing to spend more given their value, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I think Celtic have got a good way of doing things.
“People want the club to spend £20m on a player and the reality is that is not going to happen. Go and get someone for £5m and sell them for £25m, that is the product at Celtic.

“Like every other club in Scotland, we are a selling club. Unfortunately money talks and players want to go where the money is.
“When I was playing it was all about the football and you wanted to go and play with the best but it doesn’t seem to be like that anymore.”
In other news, defender granted permission to complete Celtic move and undergo medical.
