McAvennie slams referee Willie Collum as Rangers contact Scottish FA

Frank McAvennie has claimed Rangers midfielder John Lundstram should not have been sent off against Hibernian on Saturday (20 August).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker suggested referee Willie Collum gave the red card based on Lundstram’s reputation, rather than the foul.

The 28-year-old was shown a straight red after a foul in the Glasgow side’s 2-2 draw at Easter Road.

As reported by Sky Sports (22 August), Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have appealed the decision.

The midfielder is currently set to miss the club’s league game against Ross County and their Cup tie against Queen of the South but would return in time to face Celtic.

As reported by The Athletic (22 August), Rangers have expressed concerns to the Scottish FA over Willie Collum.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the incident, McAvennie said: “It shouldn’t have been a red.

It’s called taking one for the team. All the players are ahead of him, he’s tripped him up. It’s a foul, he’s taken a booking for the team, that’s all it should be.

Rangers

The first half, Hibs player did it to Rangers and that was a booking and Lundstram’s was a red. That’s not right.

It’s three on two and he’s tripped him up, he’s taken a booking it’s as simple as that. You could see the look on his face when he saw it was red. I think his reputation has gone before him, it’s as simple as that.
