McAvennie slams ‘rubbish’ Rangers statement as police and government condemn fans

Frank McAvennie has blasted Rangers for claiming only a ‘minority’ of fans were causing trouble at the weekend.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, asked why the authorities didn’t do more to stop the violent scenes.

Rangers released a statement condemning the actions of a ‘minority’ of fans in the aftermath last weekend’s celebrations.

The statement read, “Sadly, a small minority of people behaved inappropriately and in a manner not reflective of our support.”

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also criticised the ‘disgraceful’ scenes in a series of tweets.

McAvennie slammed the statement and the fans who released their ‘anger’ in the wrong way.

“For Rangers to come out and say it was only a minority of people, you’re so wrong,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“That was not a minority, that was a lot of people. It looked inevitable.

“I get there was a lot of anger with Celtic dominating for so long but release that in support, in joy.

“You’ve just won the league and you want to go out and hit people. The authorities, the police, the government, they can talk but I’ve never heard so much rubbish from them.

“Don’t keep condemning it, actually do something. But nothing will happen to Rangers, not a chance.

“I don’t want to live with that every time they win a title from now on. There should have been more arrests but once again, nothing will be done.”

Rangers fans gathered outside Ibrox before moving down to George Square.

Later in the day, Police Scotland said in a statement, “So far we know that three officers have been injured and more than 20 people have been arrested.”
