McAvennie: This is the ‘Biggest Mistake’ of Lawwell’s 18 years at Celtic

Frank McAvennie has pinpointed the “biggest mistake” Peter Lawwell made at Celtic after the chief executive announced his retirement last month.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Parkhead legend claimed the 61-year-old made a “huge” mistake not allowing Hoops manager Neil Lennon to bring in his own backroom staff.

The club confirmed on 29 January that Peter Lawwell will step down from his position as chief executive at the end of the season.

Lawwell succeeded Ian McLeod in 2003 and has guided the Hoops to nine consecutive league titles and the treble-treble.

However, he looks unlikely to guide the Bhoys to a historic 10-in-a-row with Glasgow rivals Rangers 21 points clear in the title race.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Lawwell’s 18-year tenure, McAvennie said: “Listen, Peter Lawwell is a strong character.

“The biggest mistake he made for me was not giving Lenny his own backroom staff. That has been a huge problem this year.

“If he had his own backroom staff in there I think they could have sorted it out. They were talking about John Hartson going in and he could have spoke with the players. He could have got the boys on their side.

“If he had done that and we went on to win the 10, Peter would have been lauded as one of the best chief executives ever.

“It is a strange one though because they have faired so badly this year, I think Peter will get slaughtered.”
