McLeish backs ‘brilliant’ Celtic move as O’Neill plot revealed
Celtic have made an “absolutely brilliant” decision to consult Martin O’Neill in their hunt for a new manager.
That is the view of former Rangers boss Alex McLeish who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 69-year-old would offer the Bhoys some “expert” insight.
As revealed by Football Insider, the Celtic board are set to pick O’Neill’s brains over who and what is needed at Parkhead following Neil Lennon’s resignation.
The former Hoops boss is still highly regarded among senior officials at Parkhead and it is thought his opinion could help guide the club towards the right appointment.
He spent four years in charge of the Bhoys, leading the club to three league titles.
McLeish, who went head to head with O’Neill at Rangers and Birmingham City, insisted consulting his former rival was a no-brainer.
Asked how valuable O’Neill’s input would be, McLeish told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “Absolutely brilliant. They can call on Martin’s services for a little bit of advice, he knows what it’s all about.
“He’s been at the club there, his history needs no mention really so it’s good, it just makes sense.
“It’s common sense that Celtic would do something like that. It’s no surprise to anybody that they’d call an expert like Martin to help them recruit the correct people.”
As well as league titles, O’Neill also picked up three Scottish Cups and a Scottish League Cup during his time at Parkhead.
He has been out of work since leaving Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2019.
