McLeish: Big news has come at ‘worst possible time’ for Rangers ahead of Celtic showdown
Alex McLeish has admitted news of positive Covid cases has come at the “worst possible time” for Rangers ahead of the visit of Celtic to Ibrox.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers boss insisted Steven Gerrard needs to “stay calm” despite the immense pressure on his side.
Rangers confirmed on Tuesday (24th August) there have been positive Covid-19 tests among the camp.
The Light Blues face Alashkert on Thursday before playing Celtic on Sunday.
The Gers state those who have tested positive, as well as those deemed close contacts, are in self-isolation.
Rangers have not confirmed which players or members of staff are affected.
However, McLeish has insisted it would still impact Gerrard’s preparations ahead of a significant couple of days for the club.
McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s important to keep calm. At the same time, the expectation levels have obviously risen after last season.
“They’ll be expected to win this first opener (v Celtic), especially after the start that Celtic had. Postecoglou coming in and trying to rearrange a team.
“The thing is he’s on a good wee run and this news from Rangers comes at the worst possible time.
“I do believe that Celtic’s defence hasn’t been tested yet in the last couple of games. Mainly because, to be fair again to the coach, they have done the power of attacking.
“They have blitzed the opposition.”

Rangers currently sit fifth in the Premiership table, level on points with Celtic.
However, the Bhoys have a significantly better goal difference after scoring 13 goals and conceding just twice.
In other news, Rangers star may be dead set on quitting Ibrox after bid update, claims pundit.
