McLeish can’t believe ‘naive’ Rangers after what he spotted against PSV – ‘it’s just not on’
Rangers were “naive” in their draw with PSV and they should have won the game in the second half.
That’s according to ex-Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about his former side’s failure to secure a win at Ibrox.
Rangers drew 2-2 with PSV on Tuesday (16 August) in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier.
PSV stopper Walter Benitez had a night to forget as he fumbled Tom Lawrence’s tame free-kick into his own net, giving the Gers a 2-1 lead.
McLeish can’t believe that the Gers then failed to test Benitez again as he must have been “rattled” after conceding.
“I thought when Rangers got the second goal and the goalie made a mistake, maybe he was a bit rattled by then,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.
“Could we have peppered in more crosses or more shots into the box? There were times when Rangers had a chance to cross and they opted for a square pass.
“I thought that was a bit naive, just get that ball in the box, get that goalkeeper under pressure. He must have been rattled.
“For him to regain his composure just a few minutes after that, it’s just not on. You have to pepper him with shots and crosses.
“Rangers didn’t do that and I thought they could have exploited that. Overall, Rangers’ first half was really good.
“There was assertive passing and we were fast but you saw how PSV had some really good players and they dominated.

“It would be right for me to say that, I think that’s fair. I think a draw was a fair result in terms of both teams.
“Rangers will be gutted with the goals they conceded though, really poor marking.”
