McLeish can’t believe the reaction to Joe Aribo’s Rangers exit

Rangers have secured a “really good” deal for the sale of Joe Aribo despite question marks over his transfer fee.

That’s according to former Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s departure.

Rangers confirmed the departure of the 25-year-old on Saturday (9 July).

The Athletic reported on the day the deal was announced that the Saints have paid an initial £6million, potentially rising to £10m with add-ons.

Frank McAvennie told this site on Monday (11 July) that the Gers could have demanded a higher fee.

McLeish claims the only way Rangers could have received more for the midfielder would be if there was a bidding war between rival clubs.

“If the player was bouncing about between teams then the fee would be higher, that’s the way the financial world works,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“I think it’s a really good deal for Rangers especially after they picked him up for next to nothing.

“It’s a great return and if you aren’t in an elite group of teams in terms of winning but you are an elite club, it’s a good way of working.

“You have to rely on the recruitment guys and they must deliver and bring in other good players.

Aribo made 57 appearances for the Gers in the 2021-22 season.

He scored nine goals and provided ten assists in that campaign, including a goal and three assists in their Europa League campaign.
