McLeish issues ‘big’ Rangers claim as £7.6m deal agreed

Rangers will continue to make money despite a change to the SPFL’s league sponsorship deal.

That’s according to former Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider ab out the latest development in the ongoing dispute between Rangers and the SPFL.

The SPFL agreed a league-wide title sponsorship deal with used car retailer Cinch ahead of the 2021-22 campaign.

However, Rangers refused to participate in marketing activities for the deal, which was worth £8million over its five-season lifespan, because of a pre-existing relationship with Park’s Motors.

And, as relayed by The Athletic on Wednesday (22 June), a renegotiated £7.6million deal that excludes Rangers includes a clause that precludes the club from being part of any league-wide sponsorship arrangement for the next four years.

McLeish insists the Gers’ finances won’t be affected.

“Rangers will continue to make money and get sponsorships,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“They won the cup and got the Europa League final. It was a great season and those things bring you money, even if sponsors are not there.

The politics side of things, that’s where we must leave it up to the board.

“They will do what they believe is right at that moment in time. It’s a big decision but it is what they are there for.”

Rangers lost £23.5m for the 2020-21 financial year, the last accounting period on record.

The Gers will return to Premiership action against Livingston on 30 July as they look to wrestle the title back from Celtic.
