McLeish issues ‘incredible’ Jack Simpson transfer verdict as Rangers deal agreed

It is no surprise to see Jack Simpson leave Rangers as he should not have been signed in the first place.

That’s according to ex-Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about his former side’s latest departure.

Rangers confirmed Simpson has joined Cardiff permanently on Tuesday (9 August).

The 25-year-old moved to Ibrox in January 2021 from Bournemouth after the Light Blues decided to pay a small fee to make his pre-contract move happen a few months early.

However, he has only made 14 appearances for the club with just seven coming in the 2021-22 season.

McLeish is not surprised to see Simpson leave.

“It’s not a surprise,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“When Jack came, I had a little bit of doubt because of the amount of games he had played for Bournemouth.

“At the age of 24, you are wondering if jack should have had more experience behind him when you are bringing him to a club like Rangers.

“You have to hit the ground running. The demands are incredible as everybody knows. They have to win every week.

“Jack came into that atmosphere and I’m not saying he was intimidated but I just feel that he didn’t have the experience of more senior games.

“He wasn’t at the level.”

Simpson made 35 senior appearances for Bournemouth before moving to Ibrox.

He also has one England Under 21 appearance to his name.
