McLeish issues Nikola Katic transfer claim as player speaks out – ‘watch this space’

Nikola Katic’s Rangers career may be over even if he feels he is good enough to stay at Ibrox.

That’s according to former Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the defender’s future.

Speaking to Sportske novosti (27 July), Katic claimed “I have the quality to play for Rangers” and admitted he is in a “good position” to challenge for a starting spot at Ibrox.

The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at Hajduk Split following more than a year on the sidelines with injury.

Rangers have added Ben Davies and John Souttar to their central defensive ranks this summer and Connor Goldson has signed a new long-term deal.

As such, McLeish claims Katic’s Gers career may be over.

“It’s hard to see Nikola bursting onto the scene again,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild

“He has been out that long that you tended to think he might have already left the club. For me, there will be a little bit of nervousness about whether he will continue with this Rangers squad.

“Especially considering how well the current defenders have done. Could he be good cover? I don’t know the level he is at.

“That would be a matter for Giovanni and his coaches to asses and see whether he is fit to play the way they want.

“Watch this space.”

Rangers

Katic joined Rangers in 2018.

He has made 59 appearances for the club.
