McLeish lauds controversial Rangers move after game changer

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s persistence in signing Antonio Colak has paid dividends after his goal against PSV secured a return to the Champions League for Rangers.

That’s according to ex-Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about his former side’s most recent win.

Rangers qualified for the Champions League group stage by beating PSV 1-0 on Wednesday (24 August).

Colak, 28, scored the vital goal after Alfredo Morelos was left at home due to attitude and fitness problems.

The decision to sign the striker was initially met with confusion on social media due to an underwhelming goal return at his former clubs.

McLeish has lauded Van Bronckhorst for sticking with the man he thought was capable of taking Rangers back to the Champions League.

“Gio got everything right,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“When you look at Colak, he hasn’t a proven goalscorer and there was a wee bit of doubt about him.

“Gio must have done his homework on this guy and said ‘we believe he can score goals if we have the right team around him’.

“He obviously saw something. He knew that player very well and so far he has been a fantastic success.

“If he never kicks a ball again then he has scored the winning goal to get us into the Champions League for the first time in a very long spell.”

Rangers

Colak has scored five goals in eight total appearances for Rangers.

The Gers are next in action against Ross County on Saturday (27 July).
