McLeish makes ‘incredible’ Hickey transfer claim as Aston Villa plot reported

Alex McLeish has claimed joining Aston Villa would be an “incredible move” for Bologna’s Aaron Hickey.

The former Villa and Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the lure of playing in the “best league in the world” could tempt the 19-year-old back to the UK.

As reported by the Sun, Villa have a growing interest in signing Hickey after his impressive performances in Serie A.

The teenager has established himself as a mainstay for Bologna and has started every league game this season.

He left Hearts to join the Italian outfit last summer but struggled for form due to injury.

However, having overcome his fitness problems, he is now starring in Serie A week in, week out.

McLeish suggested Hickey’s experience in Italy means he will have the talent to play in the Premier League.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Andy Robertson, Kieran Tierney – Scotland have left-backs galore.

“I don’t know how his form is on the continent but you’d think that going there in the first place, he’s got the level to come and play in England.

“I know the Premier League is the best league in the world, with the most talent these days. So that sounds like an incredible move for Hickey.

“In the Premier League, money talks. Aston Villa, they haven’t been slouches since they got back in the Premier League. They have spent a lot of dough.”

Hickey has played 20 times for Bologna since joining last summer.
