McLeish: Rangers star Jack hit by ‘crushing new blow’

Alex McLeish has admitted Ryan Jack has been dealt a “crushing blow” after another injury setback at Rangers.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the 29-year-old would need to get his head around being sidelined again.

As confirmed by Giovanni van Bronckhorst on Tuesday (14 December), Jack has been ruled out until after the international break after an injury setback suffered in training.

The midfielder made his return from a nine-month absence last month.

McLeish suggested the latest setback would be as much a mental blow as a physical one.

“That is a crushing blow for any professional footballer,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“When you know yourself that it’s going to take a few weeks, sometimes you can resign yourself to that and get your head round it. You know you’ve got to do the rehab and everything that it takes to get back.

“In my day, sometimes a two-week absence was more frustrating. When you were out for a longer period, you knew that was a fact.

“You had to try and get yourself to a level where you can come back and make sure you don’t feel any pain anymore. That the muscle has been sorted or the knee has been sorted, whatever injury it is.

“When you’re out for a longer period, you’re resigned to coming back at the right time. It probably settles your mind a wee bit.

“I know he’ll be frustrated. For me, the two weeks of missing games was more frustrating than possibly a four or five weeker.”

Rangers

Jack has only managed to play three times all season for Rangers.

He underwent surgery on a calf injury in May.
