McLeish shares ‘astonishing’ James Tavernier claim after Rangers update

James Tavernier’s performance levels for Rangers are “astonishing”.

That’s according to former Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the defender extending his stay at Ibrox.

On July 23, Giovanni van Bronckhorst told Sky Sports that the club are in talks over extending Tavernier’s contract.

His current deal runs until the summer of 2024 and any extension would give the Gers’ captain the chance to earn a testimonial for a decade of service to the club.

Tavernier, 30, scored the winner as Rangers beat Livingston in their opening game of the 2022-23 Premiership season (30 July).

McLeish is still amazed by Tavernier’s quality.

“James has been a revelation,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild

“He’s a fantastic modern-day wing-back. The amount of goals he has scored is off the charts for a full-back.

“In the beginning, people were wondering about his defensive attributes and I think has dispelled all of those doubts now with the marvellous performance levels he has got.

“He has marvellous energy, his fitness levels are incredible. Doing those runs up the pitch, 50 or 60 yards forwards and backwards every single game.

“His level of fitness is astonishing. He’s very, very well-liked by people on the staff and he seems to be a wonderful custodian of the captaincy at Rangers football club.”

Rangers

Tavernier has made 347 appearances for Rangers since joining the club in 2015.

He has scored 83 goals for the Light Blues.

In other news, Hutton has claimed Rangers could seal deal for Alfredo Morelos replacement after report from Italy.
