McLeish suggests Rangers set for ‘huge’ Kent boost after news from Leeds

Alex McLeish has suggested Ryan Kent could reignite at Rangers after Leeds United secured the signing of Dan James from Manchester United.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the speculation over the English winger’s future may have impacted his performances.

As revealed by Football Insider in April, Leeds were keen on signing Kent but the 24-year-old chose to remain at Ibrox.

As such, the Whites moved on to other targets in their hunt for a new winger.

They eventually sealed a deal for James on deadline day.

McLeish admitted Kent’s performance have perhaps not lived up to the levels of previous years this season.

He suggested James’ move to Leeds could bring an end to the speculation and allow him to focus on his football.

Asked if Leeds’ move for James could be good news for Rangers, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah. Ryan is a huge talent.

“The expectations now are so high that when he has an ordinary game people say: ‘He’s not what he was last year.’

“Maybe there was a bit of something in his mind, about the speculation of him possibly leaving.

“The Leeds one has gone away, it seems.

“Kent can totally concentrate on his Rangers career.”

Kent has contributed two assists in seven appearances for the Light Blues this season.

The English winger has played a total of 135 times for the Glasgow giants, scoring 27 times.

His contract at Ibrox runs until the summer of 2023.
