McLeish ‘wowed’ by confirmed Aston Villa news

Steven Gerrard was right to name John McGinn as his new Aston Villa captain.

That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the change of captaincy at Villa Park.

On Wednesday (27 July), the club confirmed Gerrard has named McGinn as the new Aston Villa captain.

The former captain Tyrone Mings, took to Twitter to back the move, claiming “I have no issues with the manager’s decision”.

McLeish has also backed the move and insists Mings will be able to find his best form without the burden of captaincy.

“When people see that headline they think, wow, has something happened between Gerrard and MIngs?” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild

“It doesn’t alarm me because Steven will have done the right thing and spoken to the player before he made that decision.

“Maybe this can relive some pressure on Tyrone, he was going up and down last season and now he can conerntrate on his game with McGinn at the helm.

“I see leadership in John McGinn. It’s a good decision. It’s a decision I had to make while I was Rangers manager.

“There are many exmaples of it over the years.
