Medical booked: Everton agree to terminate Mason Holgate deal – he’s joining rivals after breakthrough in talks

Mason Holgate’s move to Sheffield United has been agreed following a breakthrough in talks with Everton and Southampton, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed that the centre-back is on his way to undergo a medical with the Blades before completing his move.

As revealed by Football Insider (1 February), United, Everton and Southampton have been in advanced talks to thrash out a deal for the 27-year-old.

Now, Holgate is set for a switch to Bramall Lane, with his season-long loan spell at Southampton expected to be terminated.

He made just five league appearances for the Saints in the first half of the season but is now on the verge of a return to the Premier League.

The former Barnsley man hasn’t played in the league since starting in Southampton’s 2-1 win over West Brom in November, but he did make Russell Martin’s starting line-up in their recent FA Cup clash against Watford on Sunday (28 January).

Chris Wilder’s side have been very keen for reinforcements to their backline to improve their troublesome defensive record – the worst in the league.

The Blades are set for two defensive signings on deadline day, with Football Insider revealing (1 February) that they agreed a deal to sign Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall on loan for the remainder of the season.

They are next in action on Saturday (3 February) when they face Aston Villa at Bramall Lane.
